While teaching the Basic Research Methods and Statistics I
course at Amsterdam University College, I found out that students profited from
receiving quick feedback on the exercises they were doing. Therefore, I
developed ‘quick-feedback excel exercises’ that take people through the basic
statistical techniques step-by-step. These exercises proved to be useful above
all in-class, because then the teacher can be there to answer questions and
coach the students. I experienced this as both a strong point, because it
improved teacher-student interaction, as well as a drawback, because outside class
times students would get stuck. This last problem prompted me to undertake a
project together with an enthusiastic student, who was happy to help improve
the approach. In the video below we introduce the project further.
Since then, I have realized that these materials may also
come in very handy for those who want to refresh the contents of the BRMS I
course, and do some exercises to make that happen. Also, some students have not
done BRMS I, but may be interested to get the basics of statistics down. The
content here may well be of service to them too.
In the project, we gathered online explanatory videos, to
which we provide links here. Our own contribution consists of the excel
exercises and the explanatory videos that accompany them.
We hope you will find
these helpful!
All the best,
Daan van Schalkwijk,
